EARCHING for Virginia Dare:
A Journey Into History, Memory, and the Fate of America’s First English Child

Virginia Dare Day Proclamation

Whereas, Virginia Dare was the first child of English parents born on American soil;

And

Whereas, the story of her family and her fate have been lost to history;

And

Whereas, Americans of all backgrounds can come together over the things we have in common in stories of ancestors, immigration, and migration;

And

Whereas, these stories of courage and failure, struggle and survival can inspire us;

And

Whereas, these stories will be lost if they are not told,

Be it therefore resolved that August 18, 2007, and every August 18 thereafter be proclaimed Virginia Dare Day—a day for Americans to tell family stories to each other and celebrate the struggles we have in common.
